Unclaimed Assets - Recover Lost Money
1. FHA Insured Mortgage Refunds
You can easily find if you are entitled to a refund from HUD/FHA for an FHA insured mortgage. It costs nothing to search the HUD website. It also costs nothing to recover your money. All you need to do is complete and notarize a simple form, HUD-27050-B which HUD provides. To get the form, simply call HUD at (800) 697-6967. Average processing time is 120 days. 2. Expired Savings Bonds
People lose track of their savings bonds over time. Also, a savings bond may have been given to you as a gift, but you are unaware of it. It costs nothing to search for savings bonds that are no longer earning interest (a good indication that they were given to you long ago but that you have forgotten about them). To find whether you may have outstanding savings bonds in your name, just go to the Treasury Direct website and enter your social security number. 3. Lost Pension Money
You may be owed pension benefits from employers that you worked for over the years. The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation has a search tool to find pension money of which you may not be aware. Click on the following link to find lost pension money: Lost Pension Search
4. Unclaimed Credit Union Deposits
When a credit union is liquidated, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is responsible for paying the share accounts to members. Invariably, some shares remain unclaimed. Even so, share accounts claimed within an 18-month insurance period are still paid at their full insured amount. There can even be a distribution beyond the 18-month period, though it may be smaller. 5. Property Escheated to the State
Every state has laws requiring property or money to "escheat" or be turned over to the state after a period of time when the owner of the property or money (e.g., a mutual fund) cannot be located. Many states offer the ability to search an online database to find whether it is holding your money. Those states that do are listed here. Click on the link, type in your name, and then see whether that state is holding your unclaimed money:
